unraveling the veil of mitochondrial surveillance pathway: a matter of life and death

As the cellular power house, mitochondria provide energy to sustain the life of the cell. The resulting dysfunction of mitochondria has been implicated in aging and numerous diseases such as cardiac dysfunction, neurodegenerative disorders and cancer. So far, little is known about the surveillance pathway that monitors mitochondrial function and activates repair programs upon mitochondrial stress.

What we can do ay current stage:

Molecular biology lab :RNAseq: screen genes which are involved in damaged mitochondria between young and old C.elegans.

system biology lab: can we build a network which can identify what pathways involve in regulating mitochondrial surveillance?

PS: it is an ongoing project in my lab and we really wanna seek someone who has background of systenbiology to join us!

Since mitochondria is mostly about the metabolism. It's relatively easy to do some calculating base on flux balance model. It would be very interesting to get the lifespan of a bunch of mitochondria mutants. So I can rationalize why they are different in terms of their impact on other reactions.
