摘 要:

Fitter proteins are selected by natural selection. The sequence-fitness mapping, i.e. fitness landscapes, is critical for understanding the mechanisms of protein evolution. Recently, the throughput of fitness assays has been improved substantially by deep sequencing. In this talk, I will present examples of how we integrate high-throughput experiments, bioinformatics, and quantitative analysis to uncover the statistical patterns and nonlinearity in protein fitness landscapes. Comprehensive characterization of the structure of fitness landscapes will guide the engineering of biomolecules and the design of effective strategies to limit antimicrobial resistance.

Lei Dai received B.S. in physics at University of Science and Technology of China and Ph.D. in physics at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In his doctoral thesis research, he used laboratory microbial populations as a model system to investigate the spatiotemporal dynamics before population collapse. He was awarded the Outstanding Doctoral Thesis in Biological Physics by American Physical Society in 2014. Currently he is studying the evolution of biomolecules and microbes as a Jane Coffin Childs postdoctoral fellow at University of California Los Angeles.
