    目:Reconciling the structure and functioning of ecosystems: a mathematical approach

摘 要:

Ecology is the scientific study of interactions among organisms and their environment. The current high rate of species extinction requires an advanced understanding of the cause and consequence of biodiversity loss. In this talk, I will use mathematical models to investigate species diversity and functioning in trophic (e.g. food webs) and/or spatial ecosystems. Our models predict that species extinction at higher trophic levels decreases the capacity of food webs in exploiting abiotic nutrients, and biotic homogenization (i.e. decrease in spatial diversity at large scales) impairs the stability of ecosystems at large scales. These predictions have practical implications for conservation and management in a changing world.
