摘 要:

  Nearly half a century ago, Berg and Brown discovered that E. coli cells perform a run-and-tumble style random walk biased towards higher concentrations of attractants. Around the same time, a purely phenomenological model of chemotaxis was proposed by Keller and Segel based on a drift-diffusion equation. Since then, much progress has been made in uncovering the molecular mechanism of this cellular navigation system. It has been a dream to develop a true mechanistic model to understand bacterial chemotaxis behaviors based on the underlying interactions of key proteins.

  In this talk, we will summarize our work in the past 10 years (with CQB colleagues and students) to develop an ab initio theory [1-3] to understand population level bacterial chemotaxis behaviors based on molecular mechanisms of the chemotaxis signaling pathway (see [4] for a review) and how theoretical predictions compare with qualitative microfluidics-based experiments [5-7].

涂豫海教授为美国IBM T. J. Watson Research Center 理论与计算物理实验室主任,北京大学定量生物学中心成员。他1983年进入中国科技大学少年班学习,1987年通过CUSPEA考试进入美国加州大学圣地亚哥分校物理系读研究生,1991年获得物理学博士学位。获得博士学位后,成为美国加州理工学院部门奖研究员。 1994 年加入著名的 IBM T. J. Watson 研究中心做研究科学家,从 2002 年起任该中心理论与计算物理实验室主任。涂豫海博士在 36 岁时由于在统计物理理论及计算生物学中的创新性应用方面的杰出贡献被当选为美国物理学会会士( APS Fellow ),现研究方向和兴趣为非平衡统计物理,非线性动力学,表面物理和计算生物学。
