Organized by IEEE and BBS, the 2020 8th International Conference on Bioinformatics and Computational Biology (ICBCB 2020) was held online from May 16th to 18th, 2020. Ph.D student Guoye Guan attended the meeting, introduced the project “Investigating Spatio-Temporal Interactions in Embryonic Morphogenesis by 4D Cell-Nucleus Imaging and System-Level Comparative Analysis - Taking Eutelic Nematodes C .elegans and C. briggsae as Examples” and was awarded one of the Best Oral Presentations. The nematode species usually have precise developmental programs at single-cell level. In contrast to the manually-perturbed embryos (e.g., mutation and compression), comparing normally-developing systems can make the observations more reliable and reproducible, and help investigate the underlying biophysical mechanisms such as the coordination between cell division timing and cell positioning. In this work, we collaborate with Prof. Zhongying Zhao’s Lab at HKBU and generated 4D cell migration data of 11 wild-type embryos for both C. elegans and C. briggsae. We identified the significant distinctions of cell division timing and cell positioning between these two animals, and analyzed how cell division timing might affect cell positioning. This work will be published in IEEE ICBCB 2020 Conference Proceedings and archived in IEEE Xplore.
