摘 要:

The primary biochemical activity of an organism is energy metabolism, the constant burning of dietary carbon into CO2. To understand it, I integrate experiments and modeling to quantify fluxes through the energy pathways. In bacteria, I established that E.coli’s choice of energy production pathway is determined by the tradeoff between efficient carbon usage and efficient proteome usage. In mammals, I discovered that the path from glucose to CO2 in mice is through circulating lactate. In future, I will focus on systematic quantification of energy metabolism in mammals, aiming for a holistic understanding of what happens to the food we eat.
