摘要:

Bacteria such as E. coli explore space by swimming, and are able to bias this movement in favorable directions by processing sensory cues. The chemotaxis pathway controlling this behavior is among the simplest and best characterized protein signaling networks in biology. We are combining experiments at the level of cell behavior (~mm), the signaling pathway (~um), as well as the intracellular spatial organization of molecules (~nm) to explore how the design of this canonical signaling network is shaped by performance requirements on the one hand, and mechanistic constraints, on the other. I will discuss recent results that suggest a new role for the adaptation module of the pathway, in dynamically modulating nanoscale spatial organization of sensory proteins to stabilize signal input-output relationships.

报告人简介:

Tom Shimizu received his Ph.D. from the University of Cambridge in 2003, working on biophysical problems of intracellular signaling using stochastic methods. In 2003-2009 he held a postdoctoral fellowship at Harvard University, where he developed F?rster resonance energy transfer (FRET) experiments in live bacteria. In 2009, he joined the faculty of FOM Institute AMOLF as a Group Leader. His research group develops biophysical experiments and theoretical models to bridge dynamics at the scale of molecules, cells and whole organisms.
