Social behavior is probably one of the most complex functions produced by the human brain, marked by at least two unique features. First, it often requires anticipating actions and intentions of others. Second, it may involve considering the well-being of others. Whereas previous work has primarily explored functional maps of brain regions involved in these social cognitive functions, decision neuroscientists are starting to go beyond localization and seek insight into neural computations underlying social behavior by combining methods of neuroscience and behavioral game theory. I will present examples from my past work to demonstrate how these approaches, when jointly brought to bear on complex social phenomena, provide tractable and quantitative understanding about how humans make decisions about one another.
