Hua’s work on the antimicrobial peptide PSI has appeared online at https://doi.org/10.1074/jbc.RA120.014311. This is a collaborative project from three groups: the Yada lab from the University of British Columbia, the Wang lab from Beijing NMR Center, and us. The paper has been selected as one of the “Editors’ Picks” of Journal of Biological Chemistry, a great honor from the journal (about 1 out of 100 published papers).
A big congratulation to Chunhong, who has won the Peking University President’s Scholarship (北京大学校长奖学金) ！Chunhong has been working on MD simulations of Ca2+-permeable ion channels, and has done an excellent job.
We have been having online group meetings for months. Without a spring retreat this year, we decided to take a group photo in the video meeting today.
The lab has been empty for nearly three months due to the new coronavirus. Although things are difficult and slow, we have been working remotely from home. Dr Chen SONG attended the 64th Biophysical Society Meeting at San Diego, California, Feb 15-19, 2020, and presented a poster about our Ca++ simulations on Feb 17.
We developed a new calcium ion model that can reproduce the interaction between calcium and protein in a quantitative manner, and studied the ion permeation mechanism of the RyR1 channel with MD simulations. The work is now published online in Nature Communications:

After two week’s self-isolation in LA, Dr. Chen SONG visited the University of California Irvine (Yu Group and Luo Group) and presented a talk entitled “The Ca2+ permeation mechanism of the open-state ryanodine receptor 1” on Feb 5, 2020.
Invited by Dr. Chen SONG, Prof. Jinbo XU from Toyota Technological Institute at Chicago visited us and delivered a seminar entitled “Progress on Protein Structure Prediction by Deep Learning” at CQB on 16 Dec 2019. Due to flight delay, the seminar had to be rescheduled to 19:30. Still, the seminar room was fully filled and the discussion continued till 22:20 …
Dr. Chen SONG was invited to attend the “Tsinghua Sanya International Mathematics Forum” and gave a talk on 12 Dec 2019. The talk was entitled “Lipid contact probability: an essential property of (membrane) proteins”, presenting the latest progress of one of our deep learning-based methods.
We organized a BPS (Biophysical Society) networking event, “Youth Workshop of Biophysics, Beijing“, at Peking University on 7 Dec 2019. It’s the first networking event of the biophysical society in China, and around 140 researchers and students participated in the events. The workshop was supported by BPS, CQB (Center for Quantitative Biology) and CLS (Peking-Tsinghua Center for Life Sciences).
